Monthly Word Group Targets
Trying to learn "all the Scrabble words" is overwhelming and ineffective. The players who improve fastest break vocabulary into monthly targets — specific word groups studied in a deliberate order that builds on previous knowledge. Each month adds a new layer of capability. After 12 months, you'll have a competition-ready vocabulary built systematically rather than randomly.

Month 1-3: The Foundation Months
These first three months establish your scoring foundation. Master these and you'll immediately score 30-50 more points per game just from knowing how to play tight positions and use power tiles efficiently.
Month 1 — Two-letter words: All 127 valid 2-letter words. Focus on the unusual ones: QI, ZA, XU, JO, KA, GI. These enable parallel plays that score 25-40 points for 2 tiles. Test: can you name all valid 2s starting with each letter?
Month 2 — Three-letter words: Top 200 by play frequency. Learn which 2-letter words extend to valid 3s (SH→SHA, HO→HOB, etc.). These hooks turn mediocre plays into strong ones.
Month 3 — Power tile words: All Q-without-U words (QOPH, QANAT, QI, QADI, etc.), top X words (AXE, OXES, LUXE), top Z words (ZAX, ADZE, FIZZ), and top J words. Never get stuck with power tiles again.

Month 4-6: The Bingo & Hook Months
This is where rating gains accelerate. Bingos add 50+ points per game, and hook knowledge lets you score while setting up future plays. These three months can add 100-200 rating points.
🎯 Month 4 Target
Know all SATIRE+letter combinations (100+ bingos). Can spot a bingo-worthy rack within 30 seconds. Average 1+ bingo per practice game.
🎯 Month 5 Target
Top 10 stems memorised (500+ combined bingos). Can identify bingo potential from partial stems on rack. Rack leave decisions consider stem preservation.
🎯 Month 6 Target
All common 4-letter hooks (front and back). Can extend any board word by 1 tile for 20-35 points. Hook plays become automatic, not effortful.
📊 Expected Impact
Average game score increase: +60-80 points. Bingo rate: 1.5 per game. Rating gain since Month 1: approximately 200-250 points.
Month 7-12: Advanced & Consolidation
The later months refine your knowledge and fill gaps that become apparent through competitive play. These words are less frequently needed but decisive when they appear.
💡 The Long Tail Principle
Months 1-6 cover the words you'll use every single game. Months 7-12 cover words you'll use once every 3-5 games — but when they appear, they're often game-deciding plays worth 40-70 points that your opponent won't see.
Month 7 — Emergency words: Vowel dumps (AALII, OURIE, ADIEU), consonant dumps (CWMS, CRWTH, NYMPH), and rack-clearing plays for desperate situations.
Month 8 — Through-bingos: 8-letter words that play through an existing tile on the board. S, E, R, T, and N are the most common through-tiles. Learn 300 of the highest-probability 8s.
Month 12 — Consolidation: Review everything. Identify words that haven't stuck. Re-drill your weakest 100 words. Play 10 games focused entirely on using words from Months 7-11.
