Surprise factor: Opponents rarely expect loanwords. Playing FENG or QADI can catch them off guard — they may challenge and lose a turn if they doubt the word's validity.
Unusual letter combos: Loanwords use letter patterns rare in English — FENG, SHUI, TOFU. This means they work in board positions where typical English words cannot fit.
Dictionary awareness: Some loanwords are SOWPODS-only (not in TWL). FENG and SHUI are valid in SOWPODS but check TWL validity if playing North American tournaments.
