Scrabble Words Starting With Q — QUIZZIFY, QUARTZ, QUIRKY & QUINTET

5 min read Word Finder

Q is worth 10 points — the joint-highest tile value in Scrabble. But it's also the most feared tile because most Q words require U. Master Q-starting words and you'll turn that feared tile into a scoring machine. QUIZZIFY alone delivers 40 points without even hitting a premium square.

👑 Top Scorer

QUIZZIFY

40 points — Q(10) + U(1) + I(1) + Z(10) + Z(10) + I(1) + F(4) + Y(4)

An 8-letter bingo candidate scoring 90 points with the bonus. Requires Q, both Z tiles, plus common letters — legendary when achievable.

Top Q-Starting Words

🏆 QUIZZIFY — 40 pts

Q + both Z tiles + F + Y. The ultimate Q-word. Bingo = 90 total.

💎 QUARTZ — 24 pts

Q(10)+U(1)+A(1)+R(1)+T(1)+Z(10). Deploys Q and Z together. Classic.

🤪 QUIRKY — 22 pts

Q(10)+U(1)+I(1)+R(1)+K(5)+Y(4). K and Y add extra punch after Q.

🎶 QUINTET — 16 pts

Q(10)+U(1)+I(1)+N(1)+T(1)+E(1)+T(1). All common tiles around Q.

Q Without U — Emergency Plays

When you draw Q without U, these words save you from being stuck with a -10 penalty at game end.

Q-Word Strategy

QUARTZ on a DWS: At 24 base points, a Double Word Score gives you 48 points. Uses common tiles (U, A, R, T) alongside Q and Z — achievable with the right board position.

QI is your insurance policy: QI (11pts) is the most important Q-word to know. It's 2 letters, needs no U, and scores 11 points minimum. On a TLS, the Q alone contributes 30 points. Always your fallback.

Hold Q with good company: If you have Q + U + Z or Q + U + K + Y, you're looking at 22-40 point plays. Hold for 1-2 turns. If nothing materializes, dump Q via QI before it costs you the game.

💡 The Q Dilemma

Q is the highest risk-reward tile in Scrabble. It scores 10 points when played but costs you 10 when stuck at game end. Know enough Q-words (with AND without U) to always deploy it within 2 turns of drawing it.

Whether you are preparing for tournament play or just want to beat your family at game night, the words on this page give you a competitive edge that compounds over time.

Board Strategy

Target premium squares: Place high-value tiles on Double and Triple Letter Squares whenever possible. A 4-point tile on a TLS becomes 12 points — tripling your investment from a single placement.

Think about hooks: Many words on this page can be extended with common prefixes or suffixes. When you play a word, consider what your opponent — or you — might add to it on the next turn.

Balance scoring and defence: A high-scoring play that opens a Triple Word Score for your opponent may have negative net value. Always weigh what you gain against what you give away.

Quick Tips

Practice with the solver: Enter your rack tiles into our free word finder to discover every valid combination. Seeing all options trains your pattern recognition over time.

Memorise in groups: Rather than learning words randomly, study them by pattern — same prefix, same suffix, or same tile combination. Grouped learning is 3x more effective than isolated word lists.

Test yourself daily: Pick 5 words from this page each day and try to use them in practice games. Active recall beats passive reading for long-term retention.

🧠 Memory Technique

Group these words into clusters of 5 and learn one cluster per day. After a week, test yourself on all 35 — you will retain 80%+ using spaced repetition. Review any forgotten words the following day.

The most effective Scrabble study habit is short, daily sessions rather than long weekly marathons. Five minutes of focused word review every day builds permanent memory faster than an hour once a week.

Scoring Patterns

High-Value Tiles

Q(10), Z(10), X(8), J(8) — power tiles that transform ordinary words into premium scorers when placed on letter multipliers.

Mid-Value Tiles

K(5), H(4), W(4), V(4), F(4), Y(4) — often overlooked but consistently add 4-5 points per word. Pair with common tiles for reliable scoring.

Bingo Bonus (+50)

Use all 7 tiles for the bingo bonus. Words 7+ letters long from this page are potential bingo candidates worth memorising specifically.

Parallel Plays

Short words placed alongside existing words create multiple crossings. Each crossing scores independently — a 3-letter parallel can yield 20+ points.
