Drawing duplicate tiles feels like bad luck — but double-letter words turn that weakness into strength. They clear your rack of repeated tiles while scoring well, especially with high-value doubles like FF. Here's how to play them strategically.

Top Double-Letter Words by Score
These words use repeated consonants effectively. The double-F pattern dominates because each F is worth 4 points — two F's contribute 8 points to any word.

W=4, A=1, F=4, F=4, L=1, E=1 · 6 letters · Double-F + W power
The best common double-letter word. W contributes 4 and each F adds 4 more. Clears two F's and a W from your rack — three high-value tiles in one play, leaving space for better draws.

Strategy for Double-Letter Plays
Double-F is gold: FF words average 12-15 points. If you draw two F's, don't panic — WAFFLE, COFFEE, JIFFY, RAFFLE, and SCOFF all use them profitably. These turn a "bad rack" into a strong scoring play.
Rack clearing bonus: Playing a double-letter word effectively removes an extra tile from your rack compared to a word without doubles. This matters for rack balance — clearing duplicates improves your next 7-tile draw probability.
SS is always hookable: Unlike FF or TT, double-S words can be created by simply adding S to an existing word ending in S (GRASSES, CROSSES). Hold double-S — you'll almost always find a play.
Don't over-hold: If you can't find a double-letter word within 1-2 turns, play one of the duplicates in a short word (OFF, ADD, ILL) and move on. Holding dead weight costs more than the potential double-word payoff.
🧠 Double-Letter Insight
The most valuable doubles are FF, BB, CC, and PP because each letter is worth 3-4 points. Double-E, double-O, and double-L add minimal score value — their benefit is purely in rack management and word availability.
