Scrabble Words with No Vowels (Yes, They Exist!)

5 min read Word Finder

Every Scrabble player dreads that moment: you look at your rack and see nothing but consonants. No A, no E, no I, no O, no U. Most players exchange tiles immediately. But what if you could play a word instead? There are valid Scrabble words with zero vowels β€” and knowing them can rescue you from consonant-heavy racks.

πŸ‘‘ Famous Vowelless

CWM

10 points Β· C(3) + W(4) + M(3) Β· Welsh: a bowl-shaped hollow

CWM (pronounced "coom") is a geological term for a cirque β€” a bowl-shaped valley carved by glaciers. It is the most famous vowelless word in Scrabble, valid in both TWL and SOWPODS, and a lifesaver when your rack is all consonants.

πŸ’‘ Dictionary Note

Not all vowelless words are valid in both dictionaries. CWM, CWMS, and NTH are universally accepted. CRWTH and CWTCH are valid in SOWPODS but may be challenged in TWL-only tournaments. Always know which dictionary your game uses.

When and Why to Use Vowelless Words

These words aren't just novelties β€” they serve real strategic purposes in competitive play.

Consonant-heavy rack rescue: Instead of exchanging 5 consonants (losing your turn completely), play SHH or CWM to score points AND draw new tiles. You still get replacements from the bag, and you didn't waste a turn.

Vowel conservation: When you have one vowel and five consonants, playing SHH or BRR lets you dump consonants without using your only vowel. You keep the vowel for a better play next turn.

Late-game survival: When the bag is empty and you're stuck with consonants, vowelless words let you play out tiles instead of passing. Every point matters in the endgame, and playing out first gives you a bonus from opponent's remaining tiles.

Board denial strategy: Sometimes the board is vowel-tight (few open vowels to build off). Vowelless words let you score in consonant-only lanes that your opponent can't access.

Words with Y (Vowel Sound, Consonant Tile)

Y functions as a vowel sound in many words but counts as a consonant tile in Scrabble (worth 4 points). These words use Y as their only "vowel-like" letter:
