Strategy Tips for Sports Words
KAYAK uses two K tiles brilliantly: If you hold both K tiles (5 pts each), KAYAK is your ideal play at 16 points. The palindrome structure also means you can read it from either direction for parallel plays.
GYM and SKI are emergency dumps: Stuck with Y or K and no vowels? GYM (9 pts) needs no vowels. SKI (7 pts) uses just one I. Both are short enough to fit anywhere on the board.
Sports verbs extend with -ED, -ING, -ER: SURF → SURFED, SURFING, SURFER. SKI → SKIED, SKIING, SKIER. GOLF → GOLFED, GOLFING, GOLFER. These extensions turn short words into bingo-length plays.
ACE hooks onto everything: ACE becomes ACED, ACER, ACES — and hooks from F(ACE), L(ACE), M(ACE), P(ACE), R(ACE). One of the most hookable 3-letter words in Scrabble.
Target premium squares with K and Y words: Place the K in KAYAK or HOCKEY on a TLS for 15 bonus points from one tile. Sports words are rich in K and Y — both high-value letters worth targeting premium squares.
