The Information Advantage — What You Know
With 10 tiles remaining, you have near-complete information. The 100-tile Scrabble bag minus all played tiles minus your rack equals your opponent's tiles (plus any still in the bag).
💡 The Endgame Information Formula
Unseen tiles = 100 - played tiles - your rack. When unseen = 3 or fewer, you know your opponent's exact rack. When unseen = 4-7, they have all of them and you know the set but not the distribution (bag is empty). Use this knowledge to block their best plays.
This information changes everything. In the mid-game, you play against probability. In the endgame, you play against certainty. If you know your opponent holds Q, V, I — you know they can't bingo, you know they need a U-adjacent spot for QI, and you can block accordingly.
The Going-Out Bonus — When It Matters
When one player uses all their tiles, they receive double the value of their opponent's remaining tiles. This creates a massive incentive to go out first — especially when your opponent holds high-value tiles.
✓ Rush to Go Out When
Opponent holds Q (20pt swing), Z/X/J (16-20pt), or multiple high tiles. Your lead is slim (under 20 points). You can go out in 1-2 turns.
✗ Don't Rush When
Opponent holds only low tiles (E, A, I = 3pts total → 6pt bonus). You can score 25+ more points with an extra turn. Going out requires sacrificing 20+ points in play quality.
Endgame Play Sequences — Planning 2-3 Turns Ahead
In the endgame, don't think turn-by-turn. Plan your entire remaining sequence. With 7 tiles and near-perfect information, you can calculate the optimal play-out sequence.
🧩 Endgame Planning Process
List all possible plays from your current rack. Score each one and note the leave.
For each play, calculate opponent's best response using their known tiles. What's the maximum they can score?
Plan your second play given the board state after both moves. Can you go out? What does the sequence total?
Compare total sequence scores (your plays + going-out bonus - opponent's plays). Choose the sequence that maximizes your final margin.
Blocking in the Endgame
When you know your opponent's tiles, you can actively deny them their best spots. This is especially critical when they hold power tiles like Q, Z, or X.
Block Q plays: If opponent holds Q without U, cover all spots adjacent to I (denying QI). If they have QU, block the premium squares where QUIZ, QUAY, or QUA would land.
Block Z/X spots: Cover DLS/TLS squares where AX, ZA, or XI would score big. These tiles need premium squares to score well — deny access and they're stuck with 8-10 point plays.
Block bingo lanes: Even in the endgame, if your opponent has 6+ tiles with good letters, they might still bingo. Fill the 7-square open lanes to prevent this.
The Math of Going Out — Worked Examples
Let's compare two endgame scenarios to show when going out fast vs scoring more is correct:

Common Endgame Mistakes
✗ Playing your highest-scoring word without checking sequences
Your 28-point play might leave tiles that can't go out next turn, giving opponent two more turns. The 18-point play that empties your rack is often better.
✗ Forgetting to block when ahead
You lead by 15. Opponent holds Z. You play for 20 points but leave the triple-letter Z spot open. They play ZAX for 39. You lost because you didn't block.
✗ Not counting tiles accurately
Miscounting by one tile changes the entire calculation. Double-check your tile tracking before making endgame decisions. One wrong deduction can cost the game.
Pre-Endgame Setup — Preparing for the Final 10
The best endgame players don't wait until 10 tiles remain to start thinking about the endgame. They prepare during the mid-game by playing power tiles early and tracking meticulously.

Play Z, X, J before the bag empties. Keep versatile tiles (E, R, S) for endgame flexibility. Start tracking tiles seriously from turn 6-7 onward.
