Words Ending With V — Rare Scrabble Endings

5 min read Word Finder

V is one of Scrabble's most frustrating tiles. Worth 4 points but stubbornly difficult to place, especially at word endings. Most players think V must always be followed by a vowel — VERY, VITAL, VOICE. But a handful of V-ending words exist, and knowing them transforms a rack-clogging tile into a quick 6-9 point play. REV, LEV, TAV — short, legal, and surprisingly useful.

Why V-Ending Words Are Essential

V is the most positionally constrained consonant in Scrabble. It almost always needs a vowel after it, which means it typically sits mid-word (ABOVE, RIVER, LOVE). But what happens when the board only has openings for word-final consonants? Without V-ending words in your vocabulary, V becomes a dead tile.

💡 The V Problem

V has zero standard 2-letter words in TWL (the North American dictionary). Compare that to X (AX, EX, OX, XI, XU) or J (JO). This means V can't be played in the tight 2-letter parallel plays that make other consonants easy to dump. V-ending words are your escape route.

Best Plays by Situation

✓ Quick V Dump (3 letters)

REV (6), LEV (6), TAV (6), LAV (6), LUV (6), GUV (7) — minimal tiles spent, V gone, rack freed for better draws. GUV is best at 7 pts if you have the G.

🎯 Higher Score (4-5 letters)

PERV (9), SPIV (9), DERV (8), GANEV (9), SCHAV (13) — when you have more tiles to work with. SCHAV is the V-ending gold standard at 13 points.

Strategy Tips for V-Ending Words

Don't hold V for bingos: V appears in very few 7-letter words compared to other 4-point tiles. If you're sitting on V with no vowel-after position available, play REV or LAV immediately. The 4-6 points now beats holding V for 3 turns hoping for VICTORY.

Hook potential: REV hooks to REVS. PERV hooks to PERVS. SPIV hooks to SPIVS. Playing the base word now lets you add S later for extra points — two scoring turns from one V-ending word.

Parallel play with V-enders: Place REV vertically next to existing words. If R lands next to A, you score both REV and RA. Short V-ending words are perfect for parallel plays because they create 2-letter crosswords easily.

Premium square targeting: REV with V on a Double Letter Score = 6+4 = 10 points. On a Triple Letter Score = 6+8 = 14 points from just 3 tiles. Always scan for DLS/TLS positions when playing these short words.

V vs Other Difficult Tiles

How does V compare to other "problem" tiles in terms of word-ending flexibility?

Tile Value 2-Letter Words Words Ending In Difficulty
V40 (TWL)~15Hard
J81 (JO)~12Medium
X85 (AX, EX, etc.)50+Easy
Q101 (QI)~5Hard

V is arguably harder to play than even Q, because at least Q has QI as a reliable 2-letter dump. V has no 2-letter word in TWL, making tight board positions genuinely problematic.
