Useful V Words for Scrabble — Tricky Consonant Plays
V is one of Scrabble's trickier tiles. Worth 4 points with 2 in the bag, it scores decently but demands vowel support — almost no English word places V without a vowel nearby. Knowing the right V words means you won't get stuck holding it while your opponent racks up bingos. Here are the plays that turn V from a burden into a weapon.

Why V Can Be Troublesome
Unlike flexible consonants like R, S, T, or N that combine freely with almost anything, V is rigid. It nearly always needs a vowel immediately before or after it. Words starting with V need a vowel in position 2 (VA-, VE-, VI-, VO-, VU-). Words with V in the middle need vowels on both sides (OVEN, EVEN, OVER). This vowel dependency means V can clog your rack when you're consonant-heavy.
💡 V Management Rule
Don't hold V hoping for a bingo unless your other tiles are excellent (like AEINR + V = many options). V rarely appears in 7-letter bingos compared to S, E, R, or T. The smart play is usually to dump V quickly for 6-13 points and free your rack for better draws.

V Strategy Tips
Pair V with X immediately: If you hold both V and X, play VAX, VOX, or VEX for 13 points in 3 tiles. This dumps two difficult consonants at once and scores 4.3 points per tile — better than most 7-letter words.
VYING is your emergency word: When your rack has V but no standard vowels, VYING (12 pts) uses Y as the vowel sound. It's the only common V word that doesn't need A, E, I, O, or U — memorize it.
Use both V tiles together: VALVE (11), VIVID (12), VERVE (11), REVVED (13) — when you're unfortunate enough to draw both V tiles, these words clear them simultaneously. Better than playing two separate V words across two turns.
V hooks for extensions: VIE→VIED/VIES/VIEW, VOW→VOWED/VOWS, VET→VETO/VETS — play the short word now, then extend it next turn for double scoring. VIEW→VIEWED→VIEWER gives you three plays from one root.
