Most players think of bingos as placing 7 tiles in a row to form a 7-letter word. But the most powerful technique — and the one that separates intermediate from advanced players — is playing through an existing letter on the board to form an 8-letter word. This opens up positions that look impossible and turns tight boards into bingo opportunities.
How Playing Through Works
When there's a lone letter on the board — say an E from someone's previous play — you can lay your 7 tiles across it, incorporating that E into your word. The result is an 8-letter word using 7 tiles from your rack + 1 from the board. You still earn the bingo bonus because you used all 7 rack tiles.

Scanning the Board: A Step-by-Step Process
When you suspect you have bingo-quality tiles but can't form a 7-letter word, scan the board systematically for through-play opportunities.
🧩 Board Scanning Process
Identify all exposed letters with open lanes (nothing blocking 8 consecutive squares through that tile).
Note the position within the lane — the board letter can be anywhere in your 8-letter word (2nd letter, 4th, 6th, etc.).
Mentally add that letter to your rack. Now you have 8 letters — can any anagram of those 8 form a word?
Check for common patterns: does adding that letter create -TION, -NESS, -MENT, -STER, RE-, UN-, or OUT-?
Verify the word fits: count squares, check for adjacent tile conflicts, confirm no invalid cross-words.
Common 8-Letter Patterns to Recognise
These patterns appear repeatedly when playing through letters. Recognising them saves you time during the game.
-TION endings (through T, I, O, or N)
CREATION, RELATION, DONATION, ROTATION — extremely common. If the board has T, I, O, or N exposed and you have the remaining letters, check these first.
RE- prefix (through R or E)
REASTING, RELATING, RETAINED, RESALTING — the RE- prefix opens hundreds of 8-letter bingos through R or E tiles.
-ING endings (through I, N, or G)
STEALING, RELATING, CREATING — any strong 5-letter base + ING through a board letter works beautifully.
-NESS endings (through N, E, or S)
BOLDNESS, COOLNESS, DARKNESS — adjective + NESS through a board letter. High-scoring and overlooked.

When to Prioritise Through-Plays
Tight boards: When most lanes are blocked, through-plays are often the only bingo option. A single exposed letter in the middle of the board gives you an 8-square lane that might be the only opening.
Triple word access: If a through-play lands on a triple word square, your bingo score jumps from 60-80 points to 100-140. Always check if exposed letters line up with premium squares.
Late game: As the board fills up, 7-letter bingo lanes disappear but through-play opportunities multiply. Every new word creates new exposed letters to play through.
When your rack is strong but imperfect: You have SATIRE + W. No 7-letter bingo exists. But if the board has an L exposed, WALITERS might work through that L.
