The endgame is where Scrabble stops being a word game and becomes a puzzle. Once the bag empties, you have perfect information — you know every tile in play. This transforms the game from probability-based decisions into calculable optimal sequences. Like chess endgames, these positions have objectively best solutions. Practicing them as puzzles builds the analytical muscle that wins close games.

How Endgame Puzzles Work
An endgame puzzle gives you: a board position, your rack, your opponent's rack (deduced through tile tracking), and the current scores. Your task is to find the sequence of plays that maximizes your final margin — or minimizes your deficit if you're behind.
💡 Key Difference from Mid-Game
In mid-game, you evaluate one play at a time. In endgame, you must calculate entire sequences forward — your play, their response, your next play — because each move constrains what follows. The highest-scoring single move often isn't the best sequence.

Consider all your remaining tiles as one unit. What order empties your rack fastest while maximizing total score across ALL plays?
✗ Greedy play
Playing your highest-scoring word first might leave you stuck with an unplayable remainder. Sequence matters more than individual play score.
Puzzle Difficulty Progression
Start with the simplest positions and build up. Each difficulty level adds complexity in calculation but teaches a specific endgame principle:
🧩 Difficulty Levels
Level 1 — Play-out (3 tiles each): Both players have 3 tiles. Find the move that maximizes your margin. Only one play deep — pure score comparison.
Level 2 — Block or score (5 tiles each): You must choose: score big now or block opponent's scoring lane. Both options change the outcome by 20+ points.
Level 3 — Two-move sequence (7 tiles): Plan your play AND your opponent's best response AND your second play. Three-ply calculation.
Level 4 — Stuck tile management: You have unplayable tiles (Q without U, VVWW). Find the sequence that minimizes penalty from tiles left on rack.
Solving Framework
Apply this framework to every endgame puzzle. It's systematic and prevents the most common error (playing the highest individual score without considering the sequence):
Step 1 — List all plays: Find every valid play from your current rack. Don't evaluate yet — just list them with scores.
Step 2 — Opponent's response: For each of your plays, what's opponent's best response? What positions does your play open or close?
Step 3 — Calculate end state: For each sequence (your play → their play → your play...), calculate final scores including tile penalties.
Step 4 — Select maximum margin: Pick the sequence with the best final margin. This may NOT be the one with the highest first-move score.

Creating Your Own Puzzles
The best endgame puzzles come from real games. After every game that goes to the wire, photograph the final position and reconstruct it as a puzzle:
📸 Record the position
Board state, both racks, current scores. You need all four pieces of information to solve it properly.
🧮 Solve at home
Without time pressure, find the optimal sequence. Check against a solver. Note where your in-game play differed.
Common Endgame Patterns
Through puzzle practice, you'll recognize recurring endgame patterns that have standard solutions. Here are the most common:
⚡ The Out-Play
You can play all tiles in one move. Opponent gets stuck with their tiles (doubled penalty). Always check for this first.
⚡ The Block
Opponent has one scoring lane. Blocking it costs you points now but saves 30+ on their turn. Calculate the net.
⚡ The Setup
Play a lower-scoring move that creates your own exclusive scoring lane for next turn. Only works if opponent can't use it.
⚡ The Dump
When holding dead tiles (VV, QU-less-Q), find any play that empties them even at 0 points. Avoiding tile penalties is worth 10-20 points.
Practice Schedule
Endgame puzzle practice should be a weekly habit, not a daily grind. The positions require deep thought — quality over quantity.
💡 Recommended Cadence
Solve 3-5 endgame puzzles per week, spending 5-10 minutes each. Compare against solver solutions. Track your accuracy rate — you should solve 80%+ correctly within a month of practice.
