How Many Tiles in Scrabble? Complete Distribution Guide

7 min read Word Finder

Every Scrabble game starts with exactly 100 tiles in the bag β€” 98 letters and 2 blanks. Knowing how many of each letter exists is fundamental to strategy. It tells you what your opponents likely hold, what remains in the bag, and whether that word you need is even possible.

E Γ— 12 tiles

E appears 12 times β€” more than any other letter in the bag

E is the most common letter in English, so Scrabble gives it 12 tiles at just 1 point each. A, I follow with 9 tiles each. These three vowels make up 30% of the bag.

Bag Composition Strategy

Track what is played: As tiles appear on the board, mentally subtract them from the bag. If 10 of 12 E tiles are visible, there are only 2 E tiles left between the bag and your opponents' racks.

S tile awareness: With only 4 S tiles total, they are precious. Track how many have been played. If 3 are on the board, the remaining S is in one player's hand β€” or still in the bag.

Power tile tracking: There is only 1 each of J, Q, X, Z. Once played, they cannot appear again. If Z is on the board, you will never draw another β€” adjust strategy accordingly.

Endgame counting: When the bag has fewer than 7 tiles, you can calculate exactly what your opponent holds by subtracting all visible tiles from the original 100. This is legal and expected at tournament level.

πŸ’‘ Key Insight

The total point value of all 100 tiles is 187 points. In a typical game, the winner scores around 350-400 points β€” meaning premium squares roughly double the base tile values across a full game.
