Distribution by Frequency Group
Rather than memorizing 27 individual counts, think of tiles in frequency groups. This makes tile tracking faster during actual games — you track groups, not individual letters.
🟢 High Frequency (6-12 copies): E, A, I, O, N, R, T
These 7 letters account for 56 tiles — more than half the bag. You'll draw them constantly. They enable bingos and should be kept on your rack when possible. If 8+ of a letter have been played, remaining draws shift significantly.
🔵 Medium Frequency (3-4 copies): D, L, S, U, G
These 5 letters provide 19 tiles. S is the most strategic here — only 4 exist, and each enables a hook (adding S to pluralize). Track S tiles carefully. Once all 4 are played, hook pressure drops dramatically.
🟣 Low Frequency (2 copies): B, C, F, H, M, P, V, W, Y + Blank
These 10 tiles (20 total with blanks) appear twice each. Once one is played, only one remains. Once both are played, that letter is exhausted. This group is easiest to track in endgame.

Why Distribution Matters — Tile Tracking Strategy
Tile tracking is the practice of deducing what tiles remain in the bag and on your opponent's rack based on what's been played. It's completely legal in competitive Scrabble and considered an essential skill at tournament level. Here's how distribution knowledge powers this strategy.

Track power tiles first: Note when J, Q, X, Z are played. One copy each means once you see them, they're gone. No defensive play needed around those letters anymore.
Count S tiles: Only 4 exist. When 3 S tiles are visible on the board, the remaining one is either in the bag or on someone's rack. This tells you whether hook threats are real or empty.
Monitor vowel exhaustion: If 10+ of 12 E tiles are played, the bag becomes consonant-heavy. Adjust by holding your remaining vowels and playing consonant-dense words.
