Useful C Words for Scrabble — Versatile 3-Point Plays

5 min read Word Finder

C is Scrabble's quiet workhorse. At 3 points with 2 tiles in the bag, it doesn't grab headlines like Z or Q — but it forms some of the game's most productive letter combinations. CH, CK, and CT patterns appear in thousands of words, and C pairs naturally with common vowels and consonants. The trick is knowing which C words score efficiently and which just waste rack space.

CWM — The Secret Weapon

👑 Must-Know

CWM

10 points · 3 letters · Zero vowels · Valid in TWL + SOWPODS

A Welsh word for a bowl-shaped glacial valley. One of the very few vowel-free words in Scrabble. When your rack has C, W, M and no vowels, this word saves your turn and scores 10 points. Memorize it — it comes up more often than you'd think.

C Strategy Tips

C loves K and H: The CH and CK combos unlock the highest-scoring C words. If you hold C + K, look for -CK endings (BACK, DECK, PICK, LOCK). If you hold C + H, start with CH- words (CHAT, CHIP, CHOP) or end with -CH (EACH, MUCH, SUCH).

C can't be doubled easily: Unlike SS, LL, or TT, CC appears in relatively few words (ACCEPT, OCCUR, ACCRUE). If you draw both C tiles, play one quickly rather than hoping for a CC word.

C for -TION/-CTION endings: Words ending in -CTION (ACTION, SECTION, FRACTION) use C in high-scoring positions. These are often 7-8 letters — prime bingo territory with the 50-point bonus.

Don't confuse C and K: Many players swap these mentally. Remember: C is 3 points, K is 5 points. If you can spell a word with either (COMIC vs KOMIK — only COMIC is valid), always verify. C words are generally more common in English spelling.
