Useful K Words for Scrabble — 5-Point Tile Strategy

5 min read Word Finder

K is a premium tile hiding in plain sight. Worth 5 points with just 1 tile in the bag, it adds serious scoring power to common English words. Unlike J, Q, or Z that require specific supporting tiles, K works with everyday letters — BACK, KICK, THINK, WORK. It's the premium tile that never feels like a burden on your rack.

Why K Is a Reliable Scorer

K appears in some of the most common English words — MAKE, TAKE, LIKE, WORK, BACK, THINK. This means when you draw K, you almost always have a playable word waiting. It doesn't require the specific tile combos that Q (needs U) or X (limited patterns) demand. K just works.

💡 K Efficiency

K averages 2.0-2.5 points per tile in the words it forms — higher than any common consonant (R, S, T, N all average ~1.2). Only premium tiles J, X, Z, and Q beat K's per-tile efficiency, but K is far easier to play than any of them.

K Strategy Tips

KA is your parallel play weapon: KA (6 pts) is valid in both TWL and SOWPODS. Use it for parallel plays — place K next to an existing letter to form KA downward while scoring the main word across. 6 points for 2 tiles is excellent efficiency.

Target DLS/TLS for K: K on a Double Letter Score = 10 points just for that tile. On Triple Letter Score = 15 points. Since K appears in short words (3-4 letters), positioning it on premium squares is often achievable. YAK with K on TLS = 20 points from 3 tiles.

K hooks well: INK→INKS/INKY, ASK→ASKS/ASKED, OAK→OAKS/OAKEN. Many K words take S or ED extensions easily. Play the base word now and extend later — or hook onto existing board words by adding K to make new words.

Don't waste K in bingos unless scoring 70+: K's 5 points are best used in short premium-square plays (15-25 pts for 3-5 tiles). In a bingo, K adds only 5 to the base — less impactful when you're already getting +50. Play K efficiently early, then chase bingos with remaining tiles.
